Nathan Vedal wrote to tell me about an interesting mistranslation into Chinese that he recently came across.
Having purchased some not particularly healthy, but quite delicious, instant noodles produced by a Korean company, he was perusing the Chinese instructions, which included the following sentence:
Jiāng 550CC de shuǐ fàngrù guō zhōng, dài shuǐ kāi hòu, fàngrù miànguǐ jí tāngfěn. Guò 4 fēnzhōng hòu, jué bàn jí kě shìyòng.
"Pour 550 CC of water into pot and wait till it boils, then add the noodle devils and soup flavoring. After 4 minutes, sense/feel-stir; can be eaten at once."
The directions are baffling. What in the devil is miànguǐ 麵鬼 supposed to mean?
miàn 麵 ("flour; noodles")
guǐ 鬼 ("demon; devil; ghost")
Are they telling us to put "noodle devils" into the boiling water?
Nathan was ultimately unable to solve the problem until he found someone online who proposed a reasonable explanation. As the author of this blog points out, it seems likely that what is intended is miànkuài 麵塊 to refer to the "block of noodles". A similar omission of the radical (semantic key; semantophore) occurs in the last phrase where juébàn 覺拌 ("sense/feel-stir") should read jiǎobàn 攪拌 ("to stir"), the hand radical having been dropped from jiǎo 攪 ("stir; mix; disturb; annoy").
One would expect this kind of orthographically incorrect character to appear in handwriting, and, in fact, I've often encountered such mistakes in reading old manuscripts and letters from friends. For typing with phonetic inputting (which is employed by the overwhelming majority of those who enter characters into electronic devices such as computers and cell phones), the more common kind of error would be to call up a different character or characters with the same or similar pronunciation, thus:
miánkuài 綿塊 ("cotton block")
instead of:
miànkuài 麵塊 ("block of noodles")
And, instead of:
jiǎobàn 攪拌 ("to stir")
the following might be mistakenly entered:
jiāobàn 交辦 ("assign to take care of")
jiǎobǎn 腳板 ("sole of the foot")
jiàobǎn 叫板 ("rhythmic passage at the end of a spoken part in an opera")
jiāobān 交班 ("hand over to the next shift [at work]")
jiàobān 轎班 ("palanquin / sedan-chair bearers")
jiāobǎn 膠版 ("offset plate" [for printing])
jiǎobàn / chāobàn 剿辦 / 勦辦 ("suppress by means of military action")
Whether as the result of phonetic inputting or shape-based inputting, one must be wary of entering incorrect characters in texts one is typing. The only real safeguard against making such errors is to have a high level of literacy to begin with and to check constantly in dictionaries when one is unsure of oneself.
May your Easter dinner not consist merely of instant noodles, much less demon noodles!

anthropologyworks: Hare Krishnas lose legal battle against McDonald’s in Mauritius
By Sean Carey
The on-going legal battle between the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and McDonald’s over the right to sell hamburgers at the Jumbo Phoenix shopping mall in Vacoas, Mauritius, a site opposite the organization’s temple, highlighted in a previous post has taken a new turn.
The interim injunction in force since 26 February 2013 prohibiting the sale of beef products by McDonald’s was lifted on 27 March. Judge Prithviraj Fecknah was persuaded by members of McDonald’s legal team that the beliefs of religiously observant Hindus on the Indian Ocean island, the descendants of indentured labourers, about the protected status of the cow cannot trump the interests of an international fast food business.
Nevertheless, last Friday lawyers representing ISCKON, including Rama Valayden, a former Mauritian Attorney General, submitted new legal arguments to the Supreme Court, which will be heard on 18 April.
Meanwhile, last Wednesday the festival of Holi was celebrated by Hindus in residential areas (see video below), including at the Holyrood football stadium in Vacoas. Somduth Dulthumun, President of the Mauritian Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation, who has backed ISCKON in its dispute with McDonald’s, told the crowd: “We must live as one family forgetting and differences. Every Hindu has obligations to his religion. Nothing is free in life, and you have to make sacrifices to promote your religion.”

Brian Goldman:

Guy Raz:
Anyway, Brian

that city …
This seems to be meant as a metaphor for how Dr. Goldman (who describes his high school self as someone who would study for a blood test) learned to relax about the possibility of not being precisely correct about everything. At least, here's the abstract for the associated TED talk:
Every doctor makes mistakes. But, says physician Brian Goldman, medicine's culture of denial keeps doctors from talking about and learning from those mistakes. Goldman calls on doctors to start talking about being wrong.
But I'm puzzled by the implication that the pronunciation of Toronto has changed since "about thirty years ago". Turning intervocalic post-stress /-nt-/ into a nasal tap remains a normal process in North American English. An urbantoronto.ca forum discussion from 2007 notes that
Wikipedia devotes an entire section to the pronunciation of Toronto saying, "Locals sometimes pronounce the city's name as 'Toronno', 'Trono', 'Toranna', 'Taranna', 'Chrono', 'Chranna' or even 'Terawhnna' ?in each case, the speaker merely pronounces 'Toronto' in the way that is most natural in his or her dialect." - Jack Chambers, a professor of linguistics at University of Toronto for more than 30 years, agrees with this logic, explaining that people born and bred in Toronto pronounce their hometown differently than outsiders because Torontonians say the name of their city repeatedly, over time becoming lazier about the pronunciation, eventually shortening it. "For people who live here their solution is to get rid of the 't' at the end."
And similar testimony can be found in a 2009 Yelp forum and a 2010 Yahoo! answers discussion.
The local pronunciation of my own city, Philadelphia, is conventionally spelled "Fluffya". That's the most opaque-to-outsiders local-pronunciation spelling that I know — but no doubt commenters will have some other candidates to suggest.
[Note: Because the cited passage is clearly edited from fragments rather than being the result of a single take, and because Raz and Goldman have similar voices, I'm not sure that I have the back-and-forth correctly assigned to participants. One of the many curious things about human speech perception is that I was not at all aware of this ambiguity until I tried to transcribe the passage with speaker IDs.]

PopAnth - Hot Buttered Humanity: Thinking in radioactive time
Ed Davey, the UK Energy Secretary of State, declared – probably through gritted teeth – ”I am confident the programme to manage radioactive waste safely will ultimately be successful.” [1]
He made this prediction in January this year, upon learning that plans to construct an underground nuclear waste repository had been voted down by local councillors in the Lake District, north western England. The vote brought to an end a four year formal collaboration with the local council in the search for a suitable local site at which to construct a store for the UK’s high-level nuclear waste.
Like its equivalent facilities in the US, Scandinavia and elsewhere around the world, the UK repository will take decades to design and obtain all needed approvals, it will then take 100 years to build and fill with wastes. It will then be entombed and must be capable of remaining sealed for at least 100,000 years to cater for the slow decay of the radioactive waste.
In invoking the ‘longer term,’ time is being co-opted in favour of the pro-nuclear facility’s cause, and yet it is the very time stretching nature of nuclear waste that makes it such an intractable policy (and physical) issue. For, much as the UK Government would like to see progress towards a solution, so the notion of an eventual success of ‘playing the long game’ runs against the grain of the short-termism endemic in democratic politics, and the fixation on immediacy of return. Yet conversely it also plays into the hands of prevarication, and a ‘not in my term of office’ political instinct.[Read the rest of the article]: Thinking in radioactive timeAuthor informationLuke BennettSenior Lecturer, Sheffield Hallam UniversityIn 2007, after 17 years in commercial practice as an environmental lawyer, Luke switched to an academic position at SHU. Erkan in the Army now...: Cengiz Aktar: AK Parti’nin müzakere vakti

Evgeny Morozov and the Rhetoric of Contempt
from The Meta-Activism Project by Mary
Evgeny Morozov is perhaps the most skilled contemporary practitioner of the rhetoric of contempt. He seeks to win arguments (and attention) by treating ideas he dislikes with scorn and ridicule and by treating their proponents with mockery and cruelty. He encourages this behavior in others. The exchange below, which happened earlier today, is a good example.

A sandstorm was kicking up at Ben Gurion International midday last Friday, winds bad enough to cancel the departure ceremony for President Obama’s winning trip to Israel. But in a sheet metal trailer on the tarmac, Obama was calming another storm, three years along and finally running out of bluster. In the box with him was his host, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Nentayahu. In Netanyahu’s hand was a cell phone. And on the other end of the line was the prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
What Would The Turkish-Kurdish Peace Deal Mean For The Region?
from Kamil Pasha by Jenny White
In YaleGlobal, Mohammed Ayoob writes that the new deal for peace between Turkey’s government and PKK rebels to end more than thirty years of hostilities also has implications for the wider region, especially Iraq, Syria, and Iran. If Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan can convince the various political factions in Turkey to go along with the plan, Ayoob argues, Syria’s threat to harbor the PKK would be neutralized and a successful social and political integration of Turkey’s Kurdish population would provide a model for Kurds in Syria and Iran as well. An end to discrimination against Kurds would strengthen democracy in Turkey.

A turbulent Easter in Cyprus
by Open Europe blog team
Uncertainty continues to reign in Cyprus. Cypriot Finance Minister Michalis Sarris resigned this afternoon, seemingly confirming the earlier (denied) rumours that he had previously tried to resign and bringing to a close what must be one of the shortest stints as finance minister in recent history (35 days). To add fuel to the fire, initial reports suggest he resigned due to the on-going investigation into people moving funds out of Cyprus ahead of the bailout. Fortunately, unlike other aspects of the crisis, the Cypriot government has wasted no time in appointing a successor with Labour Minister Haris Georgiadis already lined up to fill the role.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Open Europe Director Mats Persson argued that, while Germany has emerged as the “chief villain” of the eurozone crisis in the wake of the Cypriot bailout, “It is easy to see why German taxpayers have had enough.” He added, “two vital pillars of Germany’s post-war policy — commitment both to Europe and to sound money – are now clashing head on. This is fuelling frustration…Perhaps it’s not surprising, therefore, that this month saw the launch of Germany’s first anti-euro party, Alternative für Deutschland.”
